Interesting comments about CFH, I loved that show as well as the Screen Savers. You and Patrick originally turned me onto Firefox, and you haven't steered me wrong since. I found TWiT about seven months ago, and its almost like a drug nowadays. I look forward to when Castle Laporte is finally finished and viable!
BTW, when are you going live from the TWIT studios? Looking forward to it, though I'm more a listener than watcher.
Plus that "discussion by Disqus" link is totally unnecessary.
I'm Daniel, one of the founders of Disqus. I just wanted to stop by.
Thanks for all the feedback! We're generally aware of some of the minor kinks and we're working to address those. For more information about Disqus is about, we have a tiny features tour and faq. I know how much everyone loves reading faqs! ;)
Regarding video comments, we're working on some things that I think is pretty cool. I'd love to hear some suggestions about what'd you'd like to see though.
Leo - Great to see Disqus on this site. I remember enjoying The Screen Savers a lot before TechTV became... not TechTV and, well, not good.
I notice you're using the second WP plugin available. Just FYI, it's slightly outdated and we'll be working to update it soon. The first plugin (non-API version) is more up to date if you'd like to try that out.
Hope you all enjoy using the system and feel free to contact me directly if there are problems: daniel@disqus.com
There's a lot to like about Disqus - we'll definitely use it on the new Tech Guy site. We were looking for a better way to include commenting with threading and karma on that site. It's going to be running on Wordpress, too.
And I'll upgrade to the latest version right now. Thanks!!
Also one is able to view comments either here or via Disqus site, and thus gives more choices on display setup.
I do wish they'd add Textile or Markdown to comments, though, so I wouldn't have to emphasize words with caps!
It looks like they are planning to have a way to import old comments into Disqus. Not planning on using that at the moment.
When you get your Video thing going, please look into Tivo HD delivery, don't know if that cost$, but is very nice to have Geek on the TV. Though Ubuntu MythTV w/ icePodder works fine.
Keep up the great work!
you should post more on your blog.
Love your show, I've followed you since ZDNet
This is fun!!
ok. bye.
The ranking is neat too, but I get nowhere near enough people to bother.
Thanks!
Gary
I think this commenting system will work great for the new Tech Guy site!
Did you hit "reply" or just type a comment?
Since it seems to have all the pieces I wish I could edit the message.
Are the comments hosted at your site and a copy is sent to discus, or do they have the only copy of the coment in their database.
In re: threaded comments -- there are plenty of WordPress plugins that'll do just that.
In re: cross-site, why not coComment or the like?
Last of all, what happens when you want to take your comments with you, should you leave the Disqus service?
I've now installed Firefox 3 beta 4 -- still the same. I went into ZoneAlarm and enabled "Mobile Code" and "Web Bugs" for your site -- so far, so good. Looks like it may have something to do with how ZoneAlarm handles things. I still use it, even though you've (Leo) moved on. I find it a good, reliable security program.
Seriously, I can't think of why that would happen. It's probably not Zone Alarm but the fact that the CSS is not loading fully (there should be a white box between the text and the background picture - it's in the CSS definition). Can't think of what would cause that though. Press refresh whilst holding the shift key to force a reload and see what happens.
If I see that happen again, I will try the force-reload option.
Thanks for your comments -- cheers!
If you select the "newest" tab there, unfortunately, the sort order doesn't pick up the real, chronological timeline of postings/comments. It does, however, make for interesting, random post readings from years past :-) Such as one of the latest: "I‘ve just learned that G4 has fired the entire staff of TechTV..."
Are there any Disqus settings to better control updates on your community page?
This week, Virginia Tech’s School of Engineering released its latest computer requirements for the entering class of freshmen this fall. The requirement echoes last year’s statement as a shocking condemnation of Vista versus XP.
Last year’s statement basically said: If you use Vista instead of Tablet XP, don’t come crying to us if you can’t finish your assignments on time!
This year’s statement is only slightly less anti-Vista:
http://www.eng.vt.edu/academics/comp_require.php
* Vista Statement: The College of Engineering is strongly advising its students to continue to use Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 as their primary operating system. Windows Vista continues to have performance and compatibility issues that make it more difficult to use and support. These are not issues isolated to the Virginia Tech campus and are known throughout the information technology industry. If you have purchased a machine preinstalled with a different version of Windows, you may obtain a copy (included as part of the Engineering Software Bundle) of Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 or Windows Vista Enterprise Edition as part of the Engineering Software Bundle from Software Distribution located at 3220 Torgersen Hall, or via the software download server at http://network.software.vt.edu.
A statement from such a major institution should be humiliating for Microsoft as it prepares to end XP in less than three months.

What's the benefit of using this instead the default wordpress commenting system?
You can also have an avatar (if you sign up at http://www.disqus.com). There's better control for admins, as well. And a bunch of other features I'm just learning (like a karma system it looks like).
I'm just testing it out though. I'm primarily interested for the Tech Guy site.
I just finished up a Learning 2.0 course online that used a WordPress blog, among other things, for class discussion. We could have used this threading feature to follow the points in the discussions, especially where Q&As were involved. I can definitely see how this could work for the Tech Guy site. Think I'll pass this on to the course facilitator. TYL.
Update: Just discovered that by reading the raw RSS feed in IE, I'm able to find the most recent posts in a topic, but that's not the most user friendly way.
Update #2: Now found a good method! Via http://leolaporte.disqus.com/trying_new_comment... and using Newest and Flat, I'm able to see most recent at top, but I do NOT see that possibility or option directly on Leoville site but only via Disqus site.
